In June 2025, a Yaay/Humpback whale was struck by a ship's propeller near the south entrance of Glacier Bay — Siteeyi Gheeyi, the Ancestral Village site of the Hoonah Tlingit people. The injury sliced behind the dorsal fin but mercifully spared the spinal cord. As a Hoonah Tlingit Elder and Cultural Bearer, Fred Fulmer felt called to be a Satu'/Voice for the Yaay/Humpback — carving this mask to bring awareness to the injuries that happen all too often in Southeast Alaska waters. This is a rare piece of cultural activism expressed through traditional Tlingit carving, finished with barnacle shells gathered from Glacier Bay itself — the land and sea that inspired it.
Begun during active Season 2 (2025) in Gustavus, Siteeyi Gheeyi/Glacier Bay, Alaska, while serving as Tlingit Cultural Interpreter for ANV Alaska Native Voices Educational Institute aboard Holland America and ACL expedition vessels. Finished and refined at the artist's studio. This mask comes ready to hang.
