I had wanted to carve a Bigfoot/Sasquatch mask for a long time. Bigfoot is known throughout North America and in our legends, and I have family members with experiences related to these beings.
I began shaping this piece of Keishish/Alder during my 2025 Glacier Bay season while working aboard Alaska cruise ships. Ivy joined me as we shared Tlingit culture through carving demonstrations, presentations, and stories of the Hoonah Tlingit people, answering passengers’ questions together.
This is Bigfoot/Sasquatch Mask No. 1, carved from alder with lichen among its materials. It is a separate piece from my old-growth red cedar Bigfoot Mask No. 2 with cedar bark hair.
I like the way this mask turned out as I continue my journey as an artist. I’ll keep creating as I’m inspired.
