Tlingit Bear Mauling Mask represents people who survive Brown Bear attacks in Alaska. I wanted to carve a piece bringing awareness to living in areas that are populated by brown bears. I was given this piece of wood from Glacier Bay Alaska. It is Broad Leaf Willow and had some deformities in it. I wanted to include those in the design. That was when I was inspired to carve this mask.

I'm from the Chookaneidee Clan, Iceberg House of Glacier bay. My current ties to Hoonah are through my mom Frances Austin. I started learning to carve in the 1990s from my Clan Uncle Ray Nielsen. My journey as an artist focuses on Tlingit style art.
