“This mask carries a story deeper than wood and paint.

In July 2026, I lost my older brother. Grief like that has weight — it needs somewhere to go. I chose to carry it into the work.

I started this Shwut/Woman mask from a raw Keishish/Alder round, using only hand tools. There is a carver here in Gustavus who could have cut it down to a usable mask blank in minutes. I chose the harder way — not because it was practical, but because I needed the time. I needed every stroke, every chip, every hour of that process to help me move through losing him.

30 videos document that journey, from August 15, 2026, filmed here in Siteeyi Gheeyi/Glacier Bay, Alaska — our Ancestral homeland. What you see in those videos is not just a mask being carved. It is a Tlingit Elder working through grief the way his ancestors did — with his hands, with the land, and with the wood.

When this mask is finished, it will carry all of that with it. Whoever brings it home will hold something that was made in love and loss, in Glacier Bay, by hand.”

— Fred Fulmer, Xuna/Hoonah Tlingit Elder and Cultural Bearer

Carved during Season 2026 in Gustavus, Siteeyi Gheeyi/Glacier Bay, Alaska. To be finished and refined at the artist’s studio.
