I was contacted in spring of 2023 by PIA Petersberg Indian Association asking if I would be interested in carving a Totem pole for them. They mentioned that they have seen my work on social media, my website and like the work and style that I do. I told them that I'm interested in hearing what they have to offer and what are they thinking about in regards to a Totem pole. The person whom I was in contact with was Susan. She is the person I dealt with throughout the whole process. Anyways in Petersberg they have a park near Sandy Beach they call Hutli Park. They want to turn the park into a nicer area for the locals as well as for visitors. A trail is being added with signs that talk about the petroglyphs, old Tlingit fish traps etc. As far as carved projects they are wanting to add a Totem pole and a carved dugout canoe. Susan and I had discussed different design elements for the Totem pole. 1) 10-15 ft red cedar log. Where is this log coming from. Sealaska has logs avaliable for projects like this. Timing is an issue after an application been filled out. 2) I told Susan that I have a 11 ft old growth red cedar Totem blank in my back yard. It's hollowed out in the back, and the front is faceted and is ready for a design and start carving. This would save time overall. 3) PIA doesn't want a Totem that represents a Tribal or Clan affiliation. 4) They want an Information Totem pole that represents the area. 5) Halibut,Wolf, Killer Whale, Seal, Salmon, and a Thunderbird on the very top.
This was the 3rd and final design that was submitted and approved.
